3 Things That Should Never Go In Your Garbage Disposal

Docs Appliance • Jan 09, 2019

Do you have a garbage disposal? Garbage disposals are an amazing addition to your kitchen. With just a flick of a switch, food waste is mashed up and disposed of within seconds. While there are plenty of food items that your garbage disposal can handle, there are definitely some things that you should never try to get rid of down the sink. Here are 3 things that should never go down your garbage disposal.

Bones

Trying to dispose of bones down your sink is the first step to destroying your garbage disposal. Bones will just spin around and around with the blades. This can easily lead to blocking the disposal blades from moving or blocking up the entire drain. Bones and other dense leftover food items should be disposed of in other ways than down the sink.

Potato Peels

While it may not have an immediate consequence, potato peels can wreak havoc on your disposal. Peels get wrapped around the blades and end up causing a mess. Potato peels should always be disposed of either in the trash or compost bin. This also goes for any other starchy vegetables.

Pasta

It makes sense to rinse your pasta in your sink, but don’t dispose of it there. Pasta noodles, no matter what type, expand when they are exposed to water. Even fully cooked noodles are still susceptible to expansion. Whether you have a garbage disposal or not, pasta should never go down the drain. It’ll quickly swell and either fill up your disposal trap or cause large damage. This also goes for rice.

If you have a garbage disposal, it’s important to take care of it. There are plenty of food waste items that are okay to dump down the drain. That’s what a disposal is meant to do: dispose of food waste. However, there are some foods such as bones, potato peels, and pasta that can wreak havoc on your garbage disposal. If you’re having trouble with your garbage disposal, it may be time to contact the professionals.
