4 Tips To Make Your Washing Machine Last Longer

Docs Appliance • Mar 06, 2019

If you aren’t careful using your washing machine, it may need frequent repairs. You might even have to replace it with a newer model if you are not taking precautions with your laundry loads. Washing machines take the “load” off of us when it comes to doing laundry. But they also require maintenance and care to have a longer lifespan. If you follow some simple tips, your washing machine should last a long time.

Don’t Overload Your Washer

When doing your weekly laundry, the first thing to keep in mind is never to overload the washing machine. If your laundry basket is overflowing, it is quite tempting to load all the clothes in one run, but it doesn’t help if you load them all at once. Overloading the washing machine can shorten its life because of greater wear on its mechanical parts. You need to be aware of the load recommendations and follow them with every cycle.

Use Quality Detergent

It is also a good idea to always use quality detergent and use it wisely with every load of laundry. Quite often, people overload their washing machine with too much detergent. Most washing machines have a marker for the amount of detergent that is recommended for each load. You also need to be aware of how many clothes you are washing and which cycle you are using. Being informed will help your washing machine last longer.

Don’t Use Liquid Fabric Softener

When you use liquid fabric softeners, a residue is left behind on your clothes. It may seem like your clothes are softer, but they don’t get cleaned properly when you use liquid fabric softener. You get a coating that traps grime and stink. This kind of layer also prevents performance features in workout clothes and some modern fabrics. It is never a good idea to use liquid fabric softener since it affects all kinds of material. For instance, your towels may start to feel scratchy and smelly because of built-up residues from fabric softeners.

Use Full Washer Loads

Sometimes you may be tempted to wash a few clothes mid-week or if you are traveling. Exceptions are okay, but in general, you can extend the life of your washing machine by washing full loads. Don’t get in the habit of washing socks separately or just a handful of garments. When you do so, you use a lot of water and increase your utility bills, in addition to shortening the lifespan of your washing machine.
