A Beginner’s Guide to Utilizing a Dehumidifier

Docs Appliance • July 19, 2018

If you have never used a dehumidifier before, then the spring and summer seasons are a great time to try one out. Typically, dehumidifiers are relatively inexpensive appliances. Additionally, they help decrease the moisture of the surrounding environment. The apparatus is easy to use and maintain, so utilizing one is not a burden on your schedule or wallet. This article will highlight a few of the basics to get started in using a dehumidifier.

Why You Should Use a Dehumidifier

The name, dehumidifier, perfectly explains the function of the appliance. Primarily, the goal of using this device is to pull moisture out of the air. From there, it condenses that moisture, turning it into water in the base of the appliance. Most often, people use dehumidifiers in spring and summer when warmer temperatures bring more humid and moist environments.

Dehumidifiers Are Easy to Use

Most often, dehumidifiers are small and easy to move around. Best of all, these mobile appliances are straightforward to use. There are four main parts: the fan, compressor cooling coils, reservoir (bucket), and the re-heater. Initially, when you plug in and turn on your dehumidifier, it pulls water from the warm air in the room. From there, it deposits the air into the cooling components. As it cools, the temperature changes and causes condensation, which pools up in the removable base. Finally, the dehumidifier then spits the drier air back out. While all of this is happening, you only need to be concerned about monitoring the water level in the base to empty when full.

Benefits of a Dehumidifier

The most important benefit of using a dehumidifier comes from decreasing the moisture content of the surrounding environment. Excess moisture with limited oxygen circulation spawns mold and mildew growth, which can trigger illness and also weaken the structure of your home. Dehumidifiers can also help individuals who suffer from allergies. The air circulation helps decrease mildew and mold growth, but can also help trap pollen and dust in the process, limiting exposure.

Maintaining a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are easy to maintain. Users should routinely check the condensation bin and empty promptly in order for the air circulation to continue. Most models have an automatic shut-off when the condensation base is full, but older models may not and could potentially overflow.
