Why Is My Dryer So Loud?

Is your dryer making an obnoxious amount of noise? Any dryer will make some noise during a cycle, but if your dryer seems louder than usual, it’s possible a part is broken or needs an adjustment. Never fear, all dryers need a quick fix or some maintenance every now and then.
To guide you through the troubleshooting process, we’ve outlined some of the most common culprits of noisy dryers as well as how you can fix them.
- Is it squeaking or squealing? If your dryer is making high-pitched noises, then it means the problem is associated with a fast-moving part. Drum rollers and idler pulley wheels are both frequently associated with these noises — oftentimes, a little lubrication is all you need to quiet your machine. Alternatively, it could be your drum bearing, which is located on the far rear of the cabinet. The drum shaft should rotate freely in the bearing. However, the lubrication can dry up or rust could be causing friction.
- Is it making a scraping noise? Check your drum glides. Look for these under the front lip of your dryer drum. There’s usually one on each side. Generally, these glides are nylon or Teflon and have a cork backing. The glide can wear out, which will produce metal to metal contact and produce a scraping noise.
- Is it making it a thumping noise? Slower moving parts are probably the problem. Check to see if there’s anything between the drum and the rear bulkheads. If this space is clear, you should check the dryer belt for any imperfections, scrapes, or tears. It should be smooth and flat, with any grooves even and smooth. After that, look for your drum roller. This will be a solid hub with a rubber rim. If it’s missing any pieces or has a rough edge, it will cause a lot of loud bumping noises. Drum rollers are in the rear of the dryer, on the left and right-hand side.
- Is it a fast rattling noise? While thumping noises are associated with the drum or belt, rattling noises are often from the blower wheel. Your blower wheel will be at the front of the dryer at the end of the motor shaft. Remove any foreign objects near the blower wheel, then check to make sure the blower wheel fits snugly in the housing.
