High-Efficiency Washers: Are They Worth the Hype

Docs Appliance • September 6, 2018

High-efficiency washing machines have become popular, but a lot of consumers are debating if the higher price tag is worth the cost. Washing machines are a significant investment and add convenience to our everyday lives, so it is essential to choose the right machine for your needs. Not sure what the hype is all about? Read on to find the ins and outs of HE washing machines.

High-Efficiency Washing Machine Basics

High-efficiency washing machines are built slightly differently than conventional washing machines. Models can vary and either be top or front loading. HE washers do not have an agitator in the middle of the drum. Instead the clothes tumble and spin similarly to dryers when going through the wash cycle. HE washers still offer different washing cycles for varying clothing loads.

Pro: You Will Save Energy

High-efficiency washers get the title of “high efficiency” because of the reduction in resource usage, such as energy. These washers can tolerate larger loads of laundry, ultimately reducing the number of laundry loads and overall energy used. High-efficiency washing machines also have higher spin cycle speeds, decreasing the time and energy needed to complete a cycle. Long-term, using an HE washer can help lower your energy bill costs.

Pro: Reduced Water Use

In addition to using less energy, high-efficiency washing machines also use less water. Several studies and reports indicate HE washers use half the water, per a load of laundry compared to conventional washing machines. Water conservation also occurs because HE washers can fit larger loads of laundry. Lastly, the decreased water usage also contributes to the reduction of energy reliance, as using less water requires less heat needed for hot water cycles.

Con: High-Efficiency Washers Require More Care

The most prominent disadvantage of owning a high-efficiency washer is the extra care needed. Soap and grime will accumulate around the drum of the washer periodically due to the reduced water used during cycles. It is crucial to utilize the machine’s cleaning cycle more frequently, especially depending on how much you use your washing machine. Consumers also need to be sure to leave the front door and gasket open after each cycle, as mold and mildew can easily grow in the moist environment. Finally, HE washers work best with specific HE detergent, which may be slightly more expensive.
