Routine Washer and Dryer Maintenance: What Is It and Why Is It Crucial

Docs Appliance • Nov 16, 2017

Let’s face it, we rely a lot on washer and dryers because having clean clothes is a necessity. A broken washer or dryer can cramp your style, literally, and also put a deep hole in your finances. Luckily, there are a few things you can do periodically to keep your washer and dryer working perfectly, preventing an emergency call and having to wear your underwear over again.  Routine maintenance of your washer and dryer are crucial to keep them functioning for years to come.

Simple Maintenance of Your Washer

1.      Load Clothing Evenly

Clothes should be loaded into washers evenly on all sides for standard washers that have a central agitator, the plastic rod that sticks up in the middle. Make sure clothing is placed all around the central agitator, taking into consideration the weights of clothes. Items such as jeans or jackets will weigh more than shirts and blouses, so spreading these out evenly helps.

2.      Avoid Overloading

Overloading the washer can be tempting when we’re short on time, but the added pressure on the system can cause washer parts to exhaust faster and leave your washer unbalanced. Both standard and high-efficiency washer users should beware of loading only adequate amounts of clothing.

3.      Cleaning Your Washer

Dryer Maintenance

Your dryer works hard. If you want to keep it working at its top capabilities, you need to properly maintain it. We’ve compiled a list of three ways to maintain your dryer and keep it working at its best.

1.      Keep Lint Trap or Filter Clear

The easiest way to maintain the life of your dryer is to always clean the lint out of the filter after each use. This allows for optimal airflow each cycle. It also decreases the risk of your dryer catching fire.

2.      Clean Dryer Ventilation Tube

In addition to the lint trap, the dryer vent tube should be cleaned out. Do this annually to avoid debris build up. Locate the dryer ventilation at the rear or of the dryer. Purchasing a long brush can help to get those hard to reach spots. This tip also ensures maximum heat and air flow.

3.      Keep the Ventilation Cap Area Clear

Most dryers have a ventilation cap located on the outside of the home. This area should be checked frequently. You want to ensure it is clear of debris, such as sticks, leaves, or snow. If not, debris often builds up, blocking the air flow from leaving the dryer.
