Tips On Maintaining Your Trash Compactor

Docs Appliance • May 29, 2019

A trash compactor is a useful home appliance that compresses your garbage and reduces the amount of space you need for trash cans in your home. The compactor makes some noise while compacting, but the sound is short-lived. Your trash compactor compresses garbage to a much smaller size, which saves trash storage space. Since your trash gets compressed, you need to take it out less often. Make sure you use a heavy-duty trash bag to handle all the compressed garbage.

Additionally, if you follow a few tips for maintaining your trash compactor, it will last longer and function properly for a long time to come.

Regularly Clean Your Trash Compactor

You can plan on cleaning your trash compactor monthly. When you clean it, you can use a bacteria-fighting cleaner and degreaser to clean the platform that presses down on the garbage. Also, in general, it is a good idea to thoroughly clean any other part of the trash compactor that comes into contact with the trash.

Deodorizer

You can avoid throwing food in your trash compactor, but even then there will be some food waste in it that can cause bacteria to grow inside. This can lead to a bad odor. For temporary odor control between cleanings, you can spray the interior with a germ-killing disinfectant.

Replace the Filter

If your trash compactor has an air filter, you can replace the charcoal air filter once or twice per year. Typically your owner’s manual will have specific instructions on how to replace the filter, and you just need to follow the instructions.

Be Careful with Glass Disposal

Some models of trash compactors cannot compress glass. You can refer to your owner’s manual for details. If your compactor can handle glass, take care to make sure that glass bottles are not close to the bottom of the bag. Glass pieces could tear the trash bag or injure the person who takes the trash out. In most cases, it’s best to recycle glass.
