DIY Dishwasher Repair Tips

Docs Appliance • April 3, 2019

Dishwashers are an integral part of our kitchens, and we depend on them on a daily basis. As well as you maintain your dishwasher, though, there may come a time when you need to get it repaired or take a look at it yourself for a quick repair. Be aware of the regular noise pattern during your dishwasher cycle, and if you notice a different pattern or louder noise, it might be time to look under the hood.

Lack of Water

Before calling in a technician, you may want to look at a few things yourself to rule out the obvious issues with your dishwasher. If your problem is lack of water, you can open the dishwasher when it’s not running and check the float. Check to see if the float is stuck in the open position or won’t open at all, which might be causing your problem.

Too Much Water

If you are experiencing too much water in your dishwasher, take a look at the hose where the water comes in. Typically, you will have an inlet hose from the sink to the dishwasher. It is possible that the rubber gasket has decayed and needs replacement. It is also possible that food or other objects may have clogged the drain. In that case, your dishwasher may be filling up, but unable to drain enough.

Too Much Noise

Your dishwasher will make noise during its regular running cycle, but if you notice that it is making an unusual sound, there might be a problem. You can start by reconfiguring the dishes in the racks and spin the sprayer arm in the top rack. It is possible that dishes may have shifted during the cycle, blocking the sprayer arm’s path. You also need to ensure that all of the racks and rails are still tight. Sometimes water pressure can cause screws to loosen up and create more noise. Tightening the screws should solve the problem.

Make Use of the Instruction Manual

You should keep the instruction manual handy so that you can solve minor issues when they arise. If you understand how your dishwasher works, it will help you repair it smoothly and safely. Most dishwasher issues center around essential, core functions and require simple tools and basic DIY skills.
