Microwave Repair and Troubleshooting Tips

Docs Appliance • May 15, 2019

Microwaves are generally inexpensive and easy to replace. However, if you know some basic tricks and tips, you can increase your microwave’s lifespan and easily fix some of the common issues people face. Troubleshooting a microwave can be stress-free if you know what the generic problems are and what to do when you encounter them.

The microwave is not heating

One of the common problems that you can face is that your microwave stops heating. It is possible that there is a failure in the magnetron. Once your magnetron is burned, you need to replace it since it cannot be repaired. Some other reasons could be that your microwave has a faulty diode, a defective switch in the door or a failed capacitor. You will have to call an appliance repair professional to address these issues right away for it to function correctly.

The microwave is sparking inside

If your microwave starts to spark, it indicates that something is wrong. You need to switch off your microwave immediately and inspect it when this happens. There could be several reasons why the microwave is sparking. For example, there may be something metal in the unit or some food stuck on the interior wall.  There may be a more technician failure. For instance, it could have a damaged wave-guide, wave-guide cover or a shorted internal component. You will have to call in a professional to address these issues and refrain from using it until it is fixed.

Microwave buttons are not working

If your microwave buttons stop working, it pretty much makes it unusable. It may be because its touchpad or control panel is defective or has been damaged. It is also possible that the main control board has some defect. A minor repair may fix this problem, or you may have to replace your microwave for a newer model.

Microwave light bulb is not turning on

Your microwave has a small bulb inside, and it turns on when you open it or use it. The bulb is located behind the grill and may stop working if it burns out. It is also possible that the wiring has gone bad or the bulb socket is faulty. This is a minor issue but still needs to be looked at for proper functioning of your microwave. Remember, microwaves should always be unplugged before replacing a light bulb.

Turning table is not working

Your microwave turning table helps you cook your food faster. In some cases, the table can stop working which leads to uneven heating of your food. One of the reasons the turning table stops working is because of too much weight from your food, which can be easily fixed. If it still doesn’t work, you need to call in a professional to take a look.
